Spring Boating Checklist

Spring commissioning your boat is key to a season of fun and safe boating.

Test or install Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors. Install one just inside the aft saloon door and another just outside the forward cabin as the odorless, noxious gas typically enters closest to the engine room and settles forward.

Examine EPIRBs for their expiration date and test by following the unit's instructions. If it’s within 90 days, return to its manufacturer for battery replacement to avoid compromising the unit’s waterproof integrity.

Fire Extinguishers. Check expiration date, safety pin, and pressure gage of each one. If it will expire in the next 60 days, properly dispose of the extinguisher and buy a new one. Turn any dry-chemical units upside down and shake it vigorously, as the contents often settle to the bottom.

Test your VHFs at the dock by flipping to the weather channel to see if it’s receiving, and then do a radio check.

Make sure you have the correct number and size of PFDs for the passengers you’re likely to have onboard. Test the integrity of all inflatable vests.
